What to expect from your first medical cannabis appointment
REVIEWED BY ESSENCE DISPENSARY TEAM: Dharni Khatri | Pharmacist
If you’re considering booking an appointment for alternative medicine, it’s natural to have lots of questions. For many Australians, the first alternative medicine consultation can feel unfamiliar. What will the doctor ask? How do you know if you’re eligible? Is telehealth for the consultation an option?
We're pharmacists who specialise in dispensing alternative medicine through collaborative relationships with healthcare practitioners. We create a caring space where people are empowered on their natural path forward, together with the Essence Dispensary team’s tailored support. Whether you attend in person or a telehealth consultation, you’ll get specialist and ongoing support.
This blog article outlines what you can expect before, during, and after your first appointment for alternative medicine (if eligible).
Understanding medical cannabis as an alternative medicine option
Medical cannabis is legal and heavily regulated in Australia to ensure it’s prescribed safely and responsibly. Access is governed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), a division of the Australian Government Department of Health. The TGA facilitates access to medical cannabis through two main pathways:
-
Special Access Scheme Category B (SAS-B)
Doctors and registered nurses apply on behalf of patients to be prescribed unregistered cannabis medicines.
-
Authorised Prescriber Scheme (AP)
Doctors apply for approval to prescribe specific cannabis medicines to specific patient groups without needing to seek approval for each patient.
Doctors and registered nurses may consider prescribing medical cannabis for a range of conditions where other treatments have not provided adequate relief and the condition and/or symptoms are considered ‘chronic’.
Importantly, medical cannabis is not the same as recreational cannabis. Recreational cannabis remains illegal in most Australian states/territories. Read our blog to learn more: How to get a medical cannabis prescription in Australia.

Preparing for your appointment
Before the consultation
Preparing properly for your first appointment for alternative medicine helps ensure you get the most out of your consultation and gives your healthcare practitioner a good picture of how you’re trying to get relief from conditions or symptoms.
Before your alternative medicine consultation, have ready some summary info about your:
- medical history
- current medications and supplements
- previous treatments you’ve tried
- current symptoms (frequency, severity, duration)
- specialist reports or test results (if relevant).
It’s also helpful to prepare questions like:
- What are the potential benefits and side effects?
- How long before I may notice results?
- How will it impact my lifestyle?
Being open and detailed during your alternative medicine consultation helps your healthcare practitioner determine whether medical cannabis fits safely and effectively into your treatment plan.
Choosing between in-person and telehealth consultations
At Essence Dispensary, we can help arrange a consultation with a health practitioner at Essence Dispensary. The first consultation must be in-person at our store at 799 Old Cleveland Road, Carina. Following your first consult with a health practitioner at Essence Dispensary, you can choose an in-person consult or a telehealth appointment. Just let our team know what you'd prefer when rebooking a consult.
Telehealth consultations offer more convenience and increased privacy if that’s a concern. All consultations at Essence Dispensary are held in private consultation rooms.
The clinical assessment process remains the same regardless of whether held in person or via telehealth. Your healthcare practitioner will review your medical history and symptoms in full.
What happens during your first medical cannabis appointment
The consultation process
Your first appointment for medical cannabis is primarily an in-depth medical assessment. During your consultation, your healthcare practitioner will typically:
- Discuss your current symptoms and health concerns.
- Review your medical history and previous treatments.
- Develop a personalised treatment plan (if deemed appropriate to be prescribed medicinal cannabis products/medicine).
- Create a custom titration schedule.
- Submit TGA approval requests (via SAS-B or AP prescribing pathways).
This is not a “quick script” appointment. It’s a clinical evaluation focused on safety, suitability, and compliance. If you’re prescribed a medicinal cannabis treatment plan, your healthcare practitioner will guide you through the next steps. If medical cannabis isn’t appropriate, they may suggest alternative treatment pathways or advise further assessment. The healthcare practitioners available at Essence Dispensary collaborate with the Essence Dispensary pharmacists to arrange your products and any related tools/devices, etc.
Discussing treatment options and expectations
If medical cannabis is considered suitable, your practitioner will explain:
- The type of product recommended (e.g. oils, capsules, flowers).
- Dosage and titration approach.
- How and when to take the medication.
- Expected therapeutic effects.
- Possible side effects.
- Safety considerations (including driving regulations).
Dosage is about the overall dosage under the treatment plan (whereas a dose is about the amount of a substance taken at one time). The titration approach is about increasing your medicine over time (days, weeks, and sometimes months). This method is about finding the medicine's optimal therapeutic effect while minimising side effects. You may hear healthcare professionals saying "go low, go slow" as the titration approach. Check out our FAQs to learn more about the common terms used.
Keep in mind that everybody is unique, and as a result, the experience may vary. Alternative medicine may not be for you, but the Essence Dispensary team will help you to discover whether this is a path that moves you forward, out of pain and suffering. Like any medication, medicinal cannabis may lead to undesired side effects. To learn more about side effects, click here.
Your healthcare practitioner will explain that treatment is typically a process of monitoring and refinement. As a patient, having clear expectations is key. Medical cannabis is not positioned as a miracle cure—but for eligible patients, it can form part of a broader, structured treatment plan.
What to do post-appointment
Prescription and pharmacy support
If you get a prescription, your medication will be dispensed through a pharmacy/dispensary. The dispensing process is carefully regulated to ensure quality, safety, and compliance.
Patients typically:
- Receive confirmation of their prescription.
- Arrange payment.
- Have medication delivered securely or collected (depending on location).
Pharmacy support doesn’t end at dispensing. Specialist pharmacists like the Essence Dispensary team will guide you on product use, storage, and any practical questions about your medication. To learn more about what pharmacists and dispensers do as part of your medical cannabis care, read our blogs here.
If you already have an e-script, send us your prescription and TGA approval. The Essence Dispensary team is committed to spending the necessary time with patients, demonstrating proper medication use techniques, and assisting them in setting a positive mindset for their treatment regimen.
Patient education and follow-up
Medical cannabis treatment requires ongoing care. Follow-up appointments allow your practitioner to:
- Assess symptom progress
- Monitor side effects
- Adjust dosage if needed
- Ensure continued suitability.
A follow-up alternative medicine consultation is a normal and important part of responsible prescribing. Patient education is equally important. Understanding how to use your medication correctly, recognising side effects, and knowing when to seek advice all contribute to safe and effective treatment. By being open and regularly chatting with the Essence Dispensary pharmacists about your experience, they’ll also know when it’s time to give you a nudge to rebook your healthcare practitioner to discuss.
Your first appointment for alternative medicine is the beginning of a monitored care pathway.
Common questions people ask before their first appointment
Do I need a referral?
In many cases, a GP referral is not required, but can be beneficial to provide relevant medical history documentation.
Am I eligible?
Eligibility depends on your condition, treatment history, and clinical assessment. Medical cannabis is typically considered when other treatments have been trialled or are unsuitable. Use our free patient questionnaire, and answer 5 quick questions to check your eligibility.
How long does the appointment take?
A first appointment for alternative medicine generally takes 20+ minutes as it involves a detailed medical review.
Is telehealth legitimate?
Yes. A telehealth consultation for alternative medicine follows the same regulatory standards as an in-person consultation with a healthcare practitioner (registered nurse or doctor).
Will I definitely receive a prescription?
Not necessarily. Prescribing is based on clinical assessment and compliance with TGA guidelines.
What about privacy?
Medical cannabis consultations and prescriptions are managed under strict healthcare privacy regulations. At Essence Dispensary, you’ll be in a caring, judgement-free space and appointments for alternative medicine are held in private consultation rooms.
Does Essence Dispensary stock medical cannabis onsite?
Yes, we dispense on-site for pick up in-store or for delivery by express post across Australia. We’re able to order most commercially available products.
If there are any stock issues with a particular brand/product, we can always contact your healthcare practitioner on your behalf to request the medication prescribed to be changed to the next most suitable medicine (subject to your healthcare practitioner’s decision).
